Dr. Maral Ouzounian Appointed Division Head of Cardiovascular Surgery at University Health Network


(TORONTO, January 1, 2022)- Dr. Maral Ouzounian has been appointed as the Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at University Health Network (UHN).

Dr. Ouzounian, an accomplished pianists in her own right, is a well-known cardiovascular surgeon in Canada and worldwide.

Currently, she is a Cardiovascular Surgeon and Surgeon Scientist in Sprott Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. She is also the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Chair in Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics at University Health Network.

She received her MD from McGill University and her Royal College Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery (FRCSC) from Dalhousie University. She completed a PhD in vascular biology at the University of Toronto, and then completed an advanced fellowship in complex aortic surgery with Dr. Joseph Coselli at Baylor College, Texas Heart Institute in Houston. Since her recruitment to Toronto in 2013, she has developed her practice in Cardiovascular Surgery and grown the Thoracic Aortic Program in a multidisciplinary and collaborative manner. She is the Surgical Director of the Transcatheter Valve Program as well as the Fellowship Director for the Division of Cardiac Surgery at UHN.

Her clinical and academic interests are in the understanding and management of valvular and aortic diseases. She has published over 180 papers in the field and is an author on multiple guidelines and position statements. She is a founding member of the Canadian Thoracic Aortic Collaborative and is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. She is the Chair of the Professional Advisory Board of the Genetic Aortic Disorders of Canada and founder of the multidisciplinary Heritable Aortic Disorders Symposium.

Dr. Ouzounian is a member of multiple international aortic consortia including the Society of Thoracic Surgery Aortic Task Force, the International Registry for Aortic Dissections, and the Montalcino Aortic Consortium.

She is also the Chair of the Adult Cardiac Program for this year’s Scientific Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons and serves on the program committee for the world’s largest aortic meeting, the AATS Aortic Symposium.
