ANCC calls on Canada’s MFA to condemn Azerbaijan; appeals to the community to ask local MPs to act

OTTAWA—The Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) has called on Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly to forcefully condemn Azerbaijan’s latest large-scale aggression against the Republic of Armenia.

“We call on the Canadian Government and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Mélanie Joly to immediately issue a statement condemning Azerbaijan’s aggression, clearly distinguishing between the victim and the aggressor. Similarly, and in the spirit of close friendship and cooperation with Armenia, we call on the Minister to express Canada’s full support for Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” reads a part of the statement.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, Azerbaijani Armed Forces began a large-scale attack against the Republic of Armenia, targeting the southeastern border of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. With the use of artillery, large-calibre firearms, missiles, and drones, Azerbaijani forces have been targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, causing immense damage to areas that have a heavily concentrated civilian population.

“Years of silence from the international community have once again emboldened the Baku dictatorship to unleash its terror against Armenia and Armenians, without concealing their true intentions to ethnically cleanse the region from its indigenous Armenian population,” reads another part of the statement issued on Sept. 13.

The ANCC has also launched an action alert calling on supporters and the wider community to ask Members of Parliament to condemn Azerbaijan’s latest attack. The action alert is can be accessed and filled out here.

The ANCC is the largest and the most influential Armenian-Canadian grassroots human rights organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout Canada and affiliated organizations worldwide, the ANCC actively advances the concerns of the Armenian-Canadian community on a broad range of issues and works to eliminate abuses of human rights throughout Canada and the world.
