Armenia Sends More Relief Aid To Syria

“Azatutyun”.- Armenia has sent two more planeloads of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Syria suffering from the continuing civil war.

The Armenian Defense Ministry said a Russian transport plane delivered foodstuffs, clothing and other aid from Yerevan to a Russian airbase near the northwestern Syrian city of Latakia on Wednesday and Thursday.

A ministry statement said the aid will be distributed to “needy families” in Latakia, Damascus, Aleppo and other Syrian cities.

The Armenian government carried out similar relief supplies to Syria in October amid intensifying fighting in Aleppo. It sent more such aid through the Russian military in February.

Aleppo, which fell under full Syrian government control in December, was home to the majority of an estimated 80,000 ethnic Armenians who lived in Syria before the outbreak of the bloody conflict.

Only several thousand Syrian Armenians are thought to remain in the war-ravaged city at present. Tens of thousands of others have fled to Lebanon, Armenia and other countries during the bloody conflict.
